• Hi,
I having a problem with the back end of my wordpress website. It is not showing the “menu structure”. The menu is on the website. It can’t be edited on the back end though. In “screen options” everything is checked off. If I try to create a new menu, when I hit the create menu button, it jumps to the home page and doesn’t create a menu. There are currently 2 menus out of 3 possibles created with this “Divi” theme. I was having a problem before this theme was uploaded, btw. I thought maybe with a new version of WordPress and a new theme it would solve itself but it didn’t.

Can you give me an advice as to how to fix this issue?
Never seen anything like it in WordPress sites I’ve done.

  • Hi, Karen, & welcome. The first thing you might wish to do is to try reinstalling WordPress. If that doesn’t help, please try disabling your plugins by renaming your plugins folder, for example, by putting a 1 or a .old on the end. Let’s see if that helps. If it does, then we know that there’s a conflict w/a plugin. In that case, rename the folder back to plugins, but rename all plugins except 1 by putting a 1 or a .old at the end of the folder name. The best choice of a plugin not to rename initially is a core plugin like Akismet. Clear your browser cache & try to create a menu after each rename until you can’t, which will let you know which plugin is the problem.

You might also wish to request help w/the Divi folks, as that’s part of what you paid for.

    Hi Jackie,
The plugins were not the issue. If I reinstall WordPress, won’t I lose all my existing data, the whole website that has been created, themes etc?
    Karen

That is a common misconception, Karen. There are actually 2 parts to a WordPress installation–the files that you see, & which I’m suggesting you reinstall, & the database, which you don’t see as readily, that contains your content. So if you just use FTP, (hopefully secure FTP) to reinstall the WordPress files, your content won’t be affected. You can also use your dashboard to do it as well. I do recommend strongly, however, that you back up your database prior to doing anything, simply as a precaution. You can learn how to do that here:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database
or in a slightly more abbreviated form here:

Please let us know if that helps.

    Hi Jackie,
I contacted hostgator (my hosting company) about the reinstall and they told me I’d lose everything, I though they were wrong!

    I found this online: https://mobilunity.com/blog/how-to-reinstall-wordpress-step-by-step-guide/

Not sure if that’s accurate? Do you know of anyone who would do this reinstall for me or of any other instructional videos or documentation on the topic? I just don’t want to screw it up as I’ve never done a reinstall before.

I do have backups via code guard on hostgator so I’m good there.
    Thanks,
    Karen
