Hi,

I installed the Really Simple SSL plugin on my website but then realise it was needed on a different one (Too many windows open!) So, I deleted the plugin from that site and made sure it was deleted from the trash in my File Manager also but the site is forcing SSL now and I can’t access my website as it just says that the site is not secure.

I have spoken to my host and they don’t understand why it is doing this. They tried to edit the wp-config to define the site URL but it’s still not working.

Does the plugin change some settings that need to be manually switched back.

Can you help with this?

This sounds as if the .htaccess redirect is still active. You need to revert three things: siteurl, .htaccess, and plugin. The best way to deactivate when you don’t have access to the back-end is to use these instructions:

But if you’ve already removed the plugin, you can also do a manual deactivation:

Had the same thing happen to me. I went in through my hosting panel’s phpMyAdmin controls and changed all of the references (there are 3, as I recall) from https://mysite.com to http://mysite.com

You can aslo force this with a modification of the site’s wp-config.php file by adding:

define(‘WP_HOME’,’http://mysite.com’);
define(‘WP_SITEURL’,’http://mysite.com’);

That’s a good addition. If you already have a
define(‘WP_HOME’,’http://mysite.com’);
define(‘WP_SITEURL’,’http://mysite.com’);

in your wp-config.php, changing only the site_url in the database won’t be enough of course. Then you need to change this as well.

But running the deactivation script will handle this for you, so I would always recommend using it.
