• I am the only administrator on this WordPress site, but when trying to access it get the message:

Your access to this site has been limited

Your access to this service has been temporarily limited. Please try again in a few minutes. (HTTP response code 503)

    Reason: Manual block by administrator

Important note for site admins: If you are the administrator of this website note that your access has been limited because you broke one of the Wordfence advanced blocking rules. The reason your access was limited is: “Manual block by administrator”.

If this is a false positive, meaning that your access to your own site has been limited incorrectly, then you will need to regain access to your site, go to the Wordfence “options” page, go to the section for Rate Limiting Rules and disable the rule that caused you to be blocked. For example, if you were blocked because it was detected that you are a fake Google crawler, then disable the rule that blocks fake google crawlers. Or if you were blocked because you were accessing your site too quickly, then increase the number of accesses allowed per minute.

I can access WP-login, and I have no manual IP blocks in place, apart from these (and I’m based in the UK):

Any ideas how/why I’m getting this message suddenly?

  • That Wordfence error message is frustrating lame, it just leaves us in mystery. Once you regain access try adding your own IP to the “Whitelisted IP addresses that bypass all rules.” I leave it that way permanently, otherwise too much wasted time dealing with mistaken blocks of myself. MTN

    Thanks MountainGuy2 … I would, but I’m not on a fixed IP 🙁

Currently I’ve eactived Wordfence and reactivated it and I seem to be OK … no idea why though!

It might be worth setting up your system so you have a static IP, at least during trouble shooting. On the other hand, it’s very nice having a Dynamic IP in terms of personal security, one less thing you get tracked by.

In any case, this looks like good instructions for setting up network so you have static IP.

Apologies if this actually doesn’t work, but it’s the thought that counts, right?

Had the same thing in a couple of sites. It seems to be random. And clearing the blocked IPs list seems to fix the issue.

They need to fix that ’cause it makes using Wordfence kinda worthless if you have to reset the blocked IP periodically.
