    Hi,

I have installed WordFence on my website and a couple of days ago, I observed that the WordFence directory was deleted from my website. It has only two folders within it, namely, images and css. I reinstalled WordFence. I feel that this is the mischief of an IP address and I have blocked the IP. Although I have blocked it, the same IP is trying at regular intervals to access my Website.

Question which I have is as follows :

Can someone access my website directories without knowing the FTP username and password and delete the WordFence directory?

What other precautions, do I need to take to ensure that this is not repeated.

    Please let me know

    Thanks

    Sachin

  • Hi Sachin,
Answering to your question, he doesn’t need to access directories on your website directly as you do via FTP, but if you have any plugin or theme -most probably outdated- installed with a vulnerability, attacker can exploit it to gain read/write permissions to files on your server and even running a malicious code.

That’s why it’s recommended to keep all your plugins/themes and WordPress itself updated to the latest version, along with securing your WordPress working environment as well, also, I recommend reading “Has my site been hacked? How to Check” article as it should be helpful in this case.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Thanks for the response. I have kept all my plugins and wordpress updated. I guess, it was someone with a FTP access, who possibly deleted the directory.

    Thanks

    Sachin
