change blog index page

My current blog page on my website looks like this http://leavesfamilyhistory.co.uk/blog-news but I would like it to look similar to this http://blog.ancestorcloud.com/author/anne-sherman/. The theme is Avada and it was set up by someone else. I want to change it, but am afraid I will mess up the site. It uses a blog builder element set to medium, if I click to edit that element the options (apart from large) are Medium alternative, grid and timeline. Would either of these create an index page with two or three columns? There are a lot of pre built templates but other than their names (Home 1-20 and magazine 1-3 etc.) I have no idea how they will look. I have tried to create a clone and change that but the preview is always empty so I still cannot see what it will look like.
Hope this makes sense and someone can help me.
