Inserting wordpress posts into existing site layout

I chose other for wordpress version because I am not sure what version I am using. My wordpress was part of a complementary install by startlogic, so I’m not sure about the specifics.

Anyways, after looking around the forum help sections, it seems like WordPress work by templates. However, I don’t want to use wordpress as its own page for blogging, I want to insert the posts into an existing website, into the updates section. I know that blogging tools generally use a php code to specify what to show on the pages, so there should be php tags for showing posts from a specific category, for the date, etcetc. I am not good with php, so I am wondering, how do I insert posts from a category into an existing layout. The existing page is not in the same folder as the wordpress pages.
