• I installed a WP site using Softaculous (love it)

Softaculous lets me create UserNames like this:

    7$6i!H4L1M&e#

However, when I go to log in, I keep getting an error
message that the UN or PW is inaccurate…

When I enter my UN to get a password reset, I get
a message that the UN is incorrect.

    Why?????

I run a live/skype support desk for WP and I’m
flabbergasted by the number of people who are STILL
using UN: admin PW: 123start or something equally
    ludicrous.

WHY is it NOT yet standard practice to allow
    symbols in UserNames????

    Karen

  • During the installation process, the installation script actually states the following: “Usernames can have only alphanumeric characters, spaces, underscores, hyphens, periods, and the @ symbol” Does installing with Softaculous circumvent the manual selection of a username and password? – Also, (..takes a deep breath..) Usernames are not a key component of login security, your password strength is.

[edit] ..“using UN: admin PW: 123start or something equally ludicrous”

    Agreed. That’s just plain silly/lazy/uninformed.

I wondered why I had such a sense of Deja vu when I read your topic. 🙂 Jan and Andrew did a much better job of explaining it than I just did, in this discussion from a few months ago: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/using-symbols-in-username/
