problem with .htaccess file not writable

    Hi,

    I have uploaded from 3 different sources and computers, I have chmoded it and tried 644, 660, 755, 777 but this file is still not writable.

    This leads me to believe that something is wrong at the server level.

    Can anyone shed some light on which php configuration or wordpress setting may be causing this.
