• Can I bug you guys for some help? Iv been struggling for a week and getting nowhere trying to start a website with wordpress and I think iv messed up a bunch of things. I could really use some help to get straightened out, I feel like it should be so easy but I must be doing something wrong.

So I initially signed up to WordPress.com and signed up for their Premium service and registered a domain with them. I wanted to use a free theme I saw online but then realized WordPress.com was different than wordpress.org and I couldnt use custom themes on wordpress.com. I canceled my premium service but had to keep the domain from WordPress.com (It says I have to wait 60 days to transfer it).

I then signed up for bluehost and got my ftp setup but no matter what theme I drop into the wp-content/themes/ folder nothing seems to be showing up in the wordpress edior or in the editor on the bluehost website.

When I type in actionfiguretoronto.com/wp-admin/ it takes me to actionfiguretoronto.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ so im not sure if the website is even using the sites I can see in my ftp. I also now have three different wp-content/themes/ folders I can see in my FTP now for some reason.

Did me registering my domain with wordpress.com mess things up? I keep watching tutorials on youtube and it looks so simple but its just not working. Iv tried a bunch of different themes.

Anyone have any idea what I did?

  • If you change your hosting (WordPress.com to BlueHost) you need to update the nameserver records of your domain name to point to the new hosting server. The nameservers that you’ll need would have been supplied to you by your hosting company, normally in a ‘Welcome’ email. If you are not sure what you need just as your hosting company and they will help out. The namesever values need to be set in your domains administration area. For help with that, you’d need to ask over at WordPress.com.

Ok im going to try that. I went into the domain tab of WordPress.com and put in the ns1.bluehost.com and ns2.bluehost.com for blue host.

I guess it takes a bit to update?

Yes it does. Normalyl it will take 30 to 60 minutes, but in extreme cases it can take up to 72 hours. It all depends on how well the ISP that you use, and who they are connected to, caches the DNS settings.

How will I know it updated?

You’ll see the new site instead of the old one.
