The idea is great, but due to this security issue I can’t use it anymore 🙁

nothing to fix there, the article http://finalphoenix.me/blog/2015/02/05/7-popular-wordpress-plugins-that-will-get-your-site-hacked/ author probably has no idea what he wrote about. The security issue as very old and fixed long time ago, check the change log https://wordpress.org/plugins/download-manager/changelog/ .
