    I’ve just wasted 3 hours trying to get the Lightbox effect to work on NextGen Gallery and all to no avail. I read support forums, tried to configure NextGen effects, installed alternative lightbox/colourbox/fancybox plugins but all with the same result of the image linking to a page. Then I thought I’m sick of wasting time on NextGen Gallery every couple of months, so I was going to kick it to the kerb and look for an alternative.

    Fortunately, I came across NextCellent Gallery, installed it, deactivated NextGen, activated NextCellent and Hey Presto! Lightbox effects are working once again! I am super pleased with this plugin.
