Bottom line: No. There are hundreds of people running all kinds of WP blogs, and I don’t think anyof them have ever experienced a problem with the host complaining about server usage -well, except one, but that allegations were suspect.
The devs have done a great job at optimizing things so that even where traffic goes up any drag is kept to a minimum.
Usually when there is a lag, it’s an outside plugin – like getting data from Amazon, or BlogRolling, or an external source. Or some poorly written code in a plugin or hack (I’m guilty of this too!)

WP rules. and i say that not because I use it all the time. But because I have installed it so many times without any real problems from the server or the host.
And you dont have rebuilds either 😉
I think this guy deserves a more considered answer. WP is fine and exerpts an infintesimally small load on a server even at high volumes. However on at least three occasions I can think of something has gone awry and caused an unexplained and an unacceptably high server load for a limited period. My take is that they were all caused by plugins but that is only an opinion. It might have been rogue javascript of some graphics wierdness. Nothing to worry about but you are entitled to the facts.
ok. what i said was that i have around 12 blogs online with varying loads. and none of the web host ahs ever complained. 🙂 and i dont ahve tools to test out server loads from here 🙁

Thanks Root. I wonder what those plugins were. In any case, I guess if CPU load were a major issue then WP wouldn’t be as popular as it is.
many plugins call data from external servers like from amazon, waypath and what not. and many a times those may lead to slow loading of the sites.
