• Can someone explain the use of Custom Template when adding a new category? My assumption was that if I set a custom template when creating a new category the posts in that category would display using the custom template I selected. But I am not seeing that happen.

Also, when I select a Custom Template when adding a new category the Edit view does not have any fields that show the template I selected during the Add. It looks to me like Custom Template is not really doing anything with Category definitions. If that’s the case why is it in the UI? Please help me understand.

    Thanks.

  • Hi, @sedelstein. Which theme are you using? (WordPress doesn’t offer a Custom Template option for categories by default, so it would have to come from a theme or plugin.)

I noticed this on two website I have. One uses the Catch Box theme the other uses the Thesis framework. They each have mostly different plugins so I suppose it’s coming from the themes. I thought it was WordPress.

What I’m looking for is a way to automatically display a post in category X with a particular custom template that has somehow been associated with category X. Right now I have to manually select the desired template when I edit a post in category X.

I don’t know php so I was excited to see this custom template on the category add form. But that’s a dead end. Any ideas on how to accomplish what I’m looking for?

    Thanks.

Thesis is a premium theme not supported in these forums, but Catch Box is a standard WordPress theme. See https://codex.wordpress.org/Category_Templates on how to make category templates for a theme.
