I’ve rarely used archives, so they’re largely a mystery to me.

Using Codex advice (https://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_an_Archive_Index), I’ve created a test page and archive.php template which lists year/month/category archives.

What I don’t understand is why:

1 Yearly archives default to the home.php template.
Daily and monthly archives default to the archive.php template.

Is this because there’s no date.php template?

2 How do I use pages/templates to display date archives?

Hello,

You can look at the template hierarchy to understand which files WordPress uses on a page. This image should be very helpful. For example, the yearly archive, it tries to find date.php, if that does not exist, it tries to find archive.php, if it still does not exist, it will use index.php.

date.php -> archive.php -> index.php

I’ve tried to find a date.php template – TwentySixteen doesn’t seem to use one, and all I could find was https://codex.wordpress.org/User:Skippy/Date.php… which has some errors (easily fixed) and displays daily as a calendar rather than list.

I’ll work-through that template and try to understand it better, but even with it yearly archives still use the home.php template and the day links on the calendar deliver 404s – perhaps because my post permalinks don’t have date infO/
