    Issue: I uploaded to the latest version of wordpress and then also did some plugin updates this evening, and now the site is no longer accessible (http://www.ucsfpartnersincare.org)

    I am not even able to log into my wordpress admin account to attempt to address the issue as no login page shows up at http://www.ucsfpartnersincare.org/wp-login.php

    In Chrome I get this message;
    ==
    The http://www.ucsfpartnersincare.org page isn’t working
    http://www.ucsfpartnersincare.org is currently unable to handle this request.
    HTTP ERROR 500
    ==

    In Safari I do get the homepage up, but when trying to advance from there I end up with a completely blank browser.

    I have inherited the upkeep of this charity website and understand html / web pages etc, but am very new to WordPress so have no idea where to start. Does anyone have any pointers or suggestions?

    Many thanks in advance!

  • Hi asackley. Sounds like maybe an issue with one or more of the plugins. You can use your host cPanel File Manager or FTP to get to your site files, then go to the /wp-content/plugins directory. If you know which plugins you updated you can rename the directories for those plugins to something like pluginname-bak to disable them. If you don’t remember which plugins were updated, rename the entire /plugins folder; this will disable them all. Then see if you can access your site. If not, the next step is to go to the /wp-content/themes directory and rename the directory for your current theme. This will force WP to use one of the default WP themes. Then see if you can access your site.

    Hi bdbrown – thanks for the prompt response. I just tried to access via FTP, but looks like the site was not setup for FTP access by my predecessor (tried http://ftp.ucsfpartnersincare.org with my usual user/pass) but would not connect.

    Forgive my ignorance, not sure what the “host cPanel File Manager” is or how I would access it given I can’t even log into my dashboard and access the admin panel at all. Is this a completely separate route in?

    Thanks again.

    Wherever your site is hosted the vendor usually provides a way to manage your account; i.e. access your site files, configure FTP, access your database, set up email, configure security, install software, etc. That’s usually through a front-end like cPanel or Plesk.

    thanks bdbrown, that was the prompt I needed!

    I got access via the hosting file manager and managed to get the site back up. now to go check each plugin individually and find out which one(s) are the culprits!

    Marking as resolved

    You’re welcome; glad you got it going.

    FYI – narrowed it down to WooCommerce plugins. as soon as I reactivate, the site goes blank. Ugh.
