Can you provide more information on the error’s that you’re getting – this will help us diagnose the issue further.
Tbh, the advice given to you by 123reg was sound – disabling the plugins and switching themes is often the quickest way to getting to the bottom of a problem 🙂
Hi dartiss
Thanks for responding. I can log in to wpadmin ok but then once I am in I can’t do anything.
The left hand side menu displays but just as text, there is no formatting to it. The right hand side of the screen where the options for each menu section then normally display, such as the list of your pages or the gallery of photos in media, is white and doesn’t change no matter what you click on. When you hover the mouse over the plain white the little grey box in the bottom left hand corner of the web page that tells you the address of a link brings up different things and the cursor changes from arrow to the pointing hand so there’s something there I think. However even if you use these to guess where a button or option is and click on it, the page still remains white.
So I don’t get an error message as such, I just get nothing. I have tried disabling and reactivating one by one everything I can get my hands on pretty much and nothing has worked. I am guessing by process of elimination that the fault lies somewhere in either the PHP update which 123 did or the wordpress update that they got me to do but don’t know how to disable these or return to the previous version that seemed to work OK.
Any help at all you can give will be very much appreciated because as I sit here my options are down to a) cry b) throw something at the screen c) both!
Thanks again dartiss.
Before we direct this back to the host we need to rule everything. It’s perfectly possible that the WordPress installation didn’t work properly. So, I’d highly recommend re-installing it. The easiest way to do this is to download a fresh copy of WP, delete all your WordPress files (via FTP or file manager) except wp-config.php and the wp-contents folder and contents. Now upload the new copy (bar the wp-contents folder) and, voila, one cotton fresh installation. Fingers crossed, that may sort the problem.
Hi Dartiss
Sorry it’s taken me a while to reply. Been a bit caught up with other things so haven’t been in the office and at my computer.
So I’ve downloaded a new version of WP and have it sitting in a file on my desktop. I have the file manager open and am just about to start deleting but am getting very nervous about deleting things! Does keeping the content folder mean that all my plug ins and pages and theme will still be there?
Also I can’t see an option in my file manager to upload the new version. Do you know 123 reg and can you give me pointers about where I go to upload it?
Also in my file manager there is a file called .htaccess which doesn’t appear in the new WP download folder I don’t think. Should I not delete this then?
Sorry, I know it’s probably frustrating dealing with someone with as little knowledge as me, you’re probably wishing you hadn’t tried to help me in the first place now! I really do appreciate your help though. Thank you.
Yes, keeping the wp-content folder will retain your themes, plugins and media uploads. All that’s held in the other folders is your WordPress core software. Keeping the wp-config.php in the root folder will ensure your database settings, etc, aren’t lost.
Any files (such as .htaccess) which are in the root folder and aren’t part of the download should be kept.
Don’t worry about all the question – I don’t want you to do something you’re concerned about. If it makes you feel any better, I did exactly this just a couple of weeks ago!
But, just in case of problem, before deleting any files, back them all up – at the very worst you can then just restore it back to how it was!
Also I can’t see an option in my file manager to upload the new version. Do you know 123 reg and can you give me pointers about where I go to upload it?
You might need to try using an FTP program such as Filezilla, if 123Reg don’t allow you to upload through the file manager. I am not familiar with their setup, however.
Hi Guys
Just wanted to say thanks for your help. Got it sorted. Now just have to try and solve the original problem of not being able to upload photos!!! 🙂
Thanks again.
