Featured image always blurry

I am trying to use a featured image on a website with Fruitful theme (not public yet). When I include an image on a page or article, then the image displays correctly. However, if I choose the same image as a Featured Image, then instead of, say, myimage.jpg a picture called myimage-386×270.jpg gets selected instead of the original, and then blown up to 857x600px. The result is blurry, as is to be expected if you scale up instead of down.

Why is that? It happens regardless of which size the original picture is. Even if I upload a picture which is exactly 857x600px, the image gets downsized and then blown up again from 386x270px. That makes the Featured Image unusable.

The thumbnail size settings in WP are 150×150, 300×300 and 1024x1024px respectively.

Unfortunately I can’t reproduce your situation. We haven’t such problem on our demo. I’ve uploaded several images with different size and they look correctly. Please view our demo:

On the above page of yours you can see the problem, the image along the top is 620 x 240 px scaled up to 955 x 370 px. On the demo page you gave all images are scaled down, as I’d expect them to be, but this one isn’t. The problem only applies to featured images, the very same image added to the article as a normal image will display correctly.

On this page from your linked examples: http://littlesistersfamily.org/programs/ it’s the same, the featured image is blown up from 604px × 270px to 739px × 330px.
