Forced redirects and no admin menu

Hi
Fresh install of wordpress on a Synology NAS, everything works fine. I then tried following this guide: http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network

As soon as I complete step 4 (update .htacess & wp-config.php) I get strange behaviour:
All links force me back to the home page
There is no login menu’s even if I login at wp-login.php I get bounced back to home page and their are no links to admin pages.
If I try navigating to any admin pages it bounces me back to teh home page
When I’m accessing on my home network it bounces me to the IP address is as per config (my public IP address) but when I access over the internet it redirects me to the LAN IP of the server. (cleared cache seamed to fix this)

Any advice welcome, been reading arround and teh same behaviour is happening to lots of Synology Users.
