Thanks for your reply, but I cannot have made myself clear.
Well, I know that the avatar size can be changed in the widget settings. How can I maintain its resolution that the original uploaded image has? In other words, I want the avatar to be shown its high resolution in a 50 by 50 area but not clipped into 50 by 50.

Are you using some sort of custom avatar plugin or are we talking about Gravatar avatars?
I am using a custom avatar plugin called Avatars and I have already set it to a high resolution. On the profile page, the avatar displays its original size, but it displays a low resolution just on the sidebar.
Check with the creator of that plugin – it works as expected with default avatars/Gravatar.
