Having issues signing up new users to our site

It has been working fine a few months ago, as we have over a hundered users.
Something has changed (perhaps with plugin/wordpress updates) and now I cannot go through the process of setting up a new user.
We get a Password not correct error (when logging in after confirmation email) despite using the exact password set during the registration.q
I’ve tried a number of ways – currently only one that has worked was to login to the backend and generate a password for the user – not practical moving into the new season (several hundred users will be joining).I’ve tried to tweak password field in the UM form to use Strong password (also set in UM-Settings) I’ve tried without strong password.
You should be able to setup a new account and try out the registration process to see what I mean. The email verification is working as I (registrant) get an email after the registration form is completed. But the error keeps happening when you try to login.
