Hi there
On the Athena demo, we’re using images with a horizontal length of 1423 px. Your image need not be any larger than this. Make sure you’ve optimized the file for the web when you save it in your photo editor. Image file sizes should never be in MB, only KB. This will improve the load time of your slider.

As you suggested, I did a “save for web” from Photoshop CC 2015, and it produces a gif file – is that what I should load into my website? At 1500 pixel width and using 72 dpi, the GIF file size is 968 kb (compared to 1.2 MB with the same file and size that I saved as a JPEG). Does this sound about right?
Also, why is 1423 pixel width recommended? Why not 1400, 1450 or 1500?
Thanks, Jim
1423 is an arbitrary number; it happens to be the precise size of the image in our demo.
Does photoshop not give you an option to choose the file format when you export the image? Go with JPEG / JPG you can.
