I get this question a lot, so I wrote a small plugin addon that does this. You can get it here. To use it, click the Download Gist button at the top right, unpack the .zip file, upload the .php file to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory, and then activate it from your WordPress admin area.

I’ve also one a small phone number validation plugin as well if you want to restrict the number format.

You should only use one or the other.
