• Dear friends,

how can I upload .webp images into my media library?
When trying to upload it says:”Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.”
I googled the problem but I only could find 3 years old posts. the recommended plugIn “wp-webp” is pretty old as well and only tested in WordPress 3.x.
I’d like to renounce another plugIn and convert the images myself and then upload them.
    What are my options?

  • You mention you would like to avoid another plugin and convert them yourself. What format would you like them to be in?

I am not aware of any WordPress plugins to add support for this format apart from wp-webp, but being old and not being tested in a recent version of WP doesn’t necessarily mean that it no longer works, so it might be worth trying.

The webp format appears to be dead in the water with only chrome & opera supporting the format, so anyone using IE, firefox or safari won’t see them: http://caniuse.com/#feat=webp

Unless you have a specific reason for needing to use your webp images as they are, it might be preferable to convert them to a better supported format – perhaps using an online conversion tool: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=convert+webp
