I’m relatively new to WP, and used it for about a year.
I’ve heard talk about making a ‘parent’ theme and a ‘child’ theme; and if failing to do so, updates to the theme can cause issues with the settings and customization.
My problem is that my WP site is already made, so I’m uncertain if it’s too late -or- if it’s essential or not to make a Child theme?
I understand the function of it, like making a backup, but what escapes me is why we (WP users) should have to fear updating a theme… And if I’m happy the way it is, can I just avoid updating and keep site as it is?

Thanks to anyone who has knowledge in this department.

  • It’s not essential, but if you have modified some core files (as you said) you will lose your edits when you will update your theme. In order to prevent this, just don’t update. However, you could have some security problems in the near (or far) future.
Quotating https://www.elegantthemes.com/blog/resources/wordpress-child-theme-tutorial, “According to our recent WordPress Themes Survey, 85% of our customers customize their themes, and only 35% use a child theme when doing so.”.
    So don’t feel alone
