Hi, I just had someone build my website and now lots of quirks occurring, especially after adding SEO plugins. I just noticed he’s using 4.2.7 and an older version of Twenty-Twelve (1.7) which I see has an update available to 1.9. I’m happy with the look of my site, I just want it functioning correctly and with maximum SEO. If I have him update to present WordPress and Twenty-Twelve versions, can I anticipate much work that will need to be done to keep the site “right” or will there be a few problems since there have been so many updates since 4.2.7? I’m told for security and optimization we should be using the newest WordPress version.

Why would someone use old programs anyway?

And is there any reason not to continue with Twenty-Twelve, but get the newest version? I don’t understand if Twenty-Sixteen is a newer version of the same thing or something completely different. Sorry if my questions are too basic for this forum.

    Thanks so much!

You shouldn’t have any problem with upgrading to 4.4.2, but make a backup first just in case: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups

As for Twenty Twelve, were the modifications made directly to the theme’s files, or was a separate child theme created?

(Twenty Sixteen is a separate theme, made to be the default theme for the year 2016, whereas Twenty Twelve was the default theme for the year 2012.)

Thanks so much, James. Good to know we should be okay with the 4.4.2 update. I don’t know if he used a child theme, but after your answer I researched the term so I understand now that if he didn’t use one then there may be problems updating, but if he did, then updating will not be a problem.

Regarding Twenty-Twelve vs Twenty-Sixteen, if my goal is good SEO and speed and all the things a person wants in a site, are we fine to stay with Twenty-Twelve and just update from 1.7 to 1.9? Or will we be better off to redo it under Twenty-Sixteen, which I imagine would require my website builder to do a lot of work. Do people still build websites with Twenty-Twelve now even well past its release date?

    Thank you for your time.

The only thing about twenty twelve that I have had to adjust: add more widgetized areas and add a plugin for responsive design on mobile.

MAKE SURE you get a copy of the current working theme.
And as James said..back up everything.

You should have access to your CPanel (hosting account panel) and to your WP dashboard. If in the dashboard.. go to Appearance – Editor
the first files to come up should be your current theme. If it doesn’t say ‘child of’ or something to that effect, then he used the parent theme.

There’s no reason to move up to Twenty Sixteen if you prefer Twenty Twelve. Every theme in the Twenty series has an entirely different design, the frequency of their release is to just provide a new and unique default theme every year.

There are even folks out there who still use Twenty Ten. 🙂

If you do wish to make a child theme, follow this guide: https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/child-themes/
