child theme
-
Hi,
I cannot install a human child-theme on my client’s site. It messes up the sidebars (the widget text disappears or floats above the rest) – even when there is no custom code. As if part of the parent css was correct and part conflicting.
See : http://groennegenveje.dk
The child-theme works perfectly fine on a test site.
Any help appreciated, Thx 🙂

Hi Tarista. Welcome to the Hueman forum. I just checked your site using Chrome, Edge and Firefox. I didn’t see the problems you’re describing. But I also don’t see a child theme installed there. Is that the correct link?
Couple of other questions:
1. How did you install the child theme? Plugin? Using the theme option?
2. Is the test site an exact duplicate of the client site; i.e., did you make a copy of the client site on your test site before you installed the child theme?
3. Is the test site a subdomain on the client site? Or hosted on the same web host?
4. Did you install the child theme separately on both the test site and client site? Or did you try to copy the test site to the client site after the sidebar was installed?Hi, thanks for your comments.
You are right, there is no child theme installed at the site now. Unfortunately I cannot have it running on my client’s site until i fix it.
1. First, I uploaded a human child theme, which I got here: https://github.com/presscustomizr/hueman-child.
When it did not work, I modified the basic setup following the official WP guide here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes.
This did not work either.2. The test site is not an exact duplicate, it has a fresh hueman installation with some simple content in the sidebars. There are very few plugins and widgets on the test site.
3. The test site is on a local host.
4. The child theme was installed separately on both sites, but I used exactly the same file.
Have tried deactivating some plugins, but that did not make any difference.
I really appreciate your time. Thx.
You might try using the child theme option included with the theme. I don’t know if it’s any different than what you downloaded from Github but you might give it a try:
1. In Theme Options click the Help tab in the upper righthand corner.
2. One of the options in the list is to download a sample child theme. This downloads the theme zip file to your local computer.
3. Install the new theme in your Admin panel by selecting Add New > Upload Theme > Choose File, then select the zip file you downloaded.
4. Activate the child theme.
You’ll end up with a pre-configured child theme with a style.css file and functions.php file to which you can add customizations. If that doesn’t fix it then there must be some significant difference between the client site and your test site. If you’re running the test site on a local server then it’s like comparing apples to oranges; there’s no way they could be the same. Ideally what you would do is create a subdomain under your client’s domain so both sites would be on the same host server. Then you would copy the entire client site to your test site. There are several ways to do that; personally I like the Duplicator plugin. That way you know, with a very high degree of confidence, that they’re both running in the same environment with the same configuration, and the changes you make to the test site will, almost without exception, react the same way when applied to the client site. If you can’t create a subdomain on the client’s domain then the next best option is to create a separate account for your test site with the same host, and request them to put it on the same server as the client. If that’s not an option then I’d recommend copying the entire client site and loading it on your local server for the test site.
Thanks a lot for your time and for great instructions on how to do a proper diagnose 🙂 Will definitely try it out.
