Recently I’ve stumbled a plugin which is nice, but author is forcing people and me to link. Now, I would not have a problem to link if it’s unfollowed but it’s not.

Not sure in new version is this link removed from the homepage also (because I’ve added plugins shortcode on a page and then noticed the link on the homepage). Now in plugin settings there is a fake option to remove link, but there’s not option to save that, that’s why i say, fake option.

Even if the one decides to go trough plugin files and manually remove two links, there’s third one. Inside javascript, and if you remove it, of course plugin doesn’t work. Tricky.

So my question: Is this ok, because i think it’s not. Powered by and similar stuff, according to guidelines should have option to remove those links.

Any thing like that should be an opt-in experience for the user. I recommend emailing plugins @ wordpress.org to discuss this; give them details of the exact plugin.

Powered by and similar stuff, according to guidelines should have option to remove those links.

Powered by links have to default to OFF and need to be enabled by the user. If there is a plugin that is enabling that link by default or does not get opt-in from the user then please report it to plugins [at] wordpress.org as Andrew wrote.
