It seems like something was wrong with the files provided by the installer you used.

Try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

Thanks for the input, James! I spent some time looking for fixes; then I deleted the WP folder off my server and used Hostgator’s QuickInstall option to reinstall; done in seconds. Of course, the first time round I learnt quite a bit.

With the new install, I had a look at the WP-CONFIG; the format was different.
Next time I will find a way to get the Download Manager to grab the download; when letting Chrome handle downloads they can get truncated without any warning.

Well, off to tweak my site 🙂
