You will never find a theme that does all that.
Mainly, because your “requirement list” is NOT theme-related. Those features are all available with plugins.
I am a bit confused; basically I thought themes were more like layouts, while plugins were pieces of fuctionality. I have tried to add plugins stating they were able to do these things, but then they were incompatible with the themes…? Am I stupid?
OK, the magazine-like look is a theme design issue, and I have seen quite a few good ones.
The rest of “funcionality” is plugins.
I don’t really understand the plugin-theme incompatibility.
Let’s break it down.
- a news site (magazine, newspaper-like) = theme
- articles with several pictures = the content you put in
- printer friendly output of article = theme (use a print stylesheet)
- send article to friend – plugin
- comments with security like captcha – plugin, but captchas are evil so don’t use them
Break it down into pieces. First find a theme that is simple but looks more or less like you want it to look like. Customize it yourself to make it look better. Add your own print stylesheet to it for nice print-outs (this is better than trying to use a plugin… see my own site for an example, just print any post and watch the magical transformation). Then add plugins to do the other things you want to do.
I too do not understand what you mean by “incompatible”. Plugins and themes cannot really be incompatible.
