    Hi. I have a problem that I never had before with your plugin iThemes Security. When I am on the front end of my website and try to go to the back end (admin), I can not get there (to admin section). It shows me 404 error. I tried your advice “After logging in, reset the Hide Backend feature by enabling the hide backend feature to your desired Login URL slug and click Save Changes.”, but it does not working. It still shows me 404 error. Can you help me please? Thank you David

    Ok, Here it is: http://konverto.cz

    @david

    I clicked on the ‘PΕ™ihlΓ‘sit se’ link (first guess) on your website homepage and navigated straight to the WP Dashboard login screen…

    Using Firefox 44 on Windows 7 Pro SP1.

    I have no problem to login to admin dashboard of my website. My problem is, that when I go from admin (back end) to front end of my web (I view website) then I can not go back to backend (admin section of my web). Everytime I try to go back to admin dashboard from my frontend the 404 error appears. It has stared maybe 2 months ago. It never happend before.

    @david

    Ah ok you are switching, right. I knew I was missing something …

    So how exactly do you try to go back to admin ?
    Using the browser back button or Dashboard menu option ?

    I am going back to admin dashboard using top menu. So using dashboard menu.

    David

    @david

    And what URL do you see on the frontend behind the dashboard option in the top menu ?

    Is it using the correct “www.domain.com/wp-admin/” URL ?

    What happens when you use the browser back button ?

    The URL of dashboard in the top menu is “domain.com/wp-admin/”
    Every time I use one of link in top menu where is “wp-admin” in URL, it shows 404 error.

    When I use back button I get to dashboard, but links in top menu do not work. But like I wrote before, it never happened before.

    It looks like the system don’t know that I am logged-in administrator and treats me like a non logged-in user. And that’s why I’m seeing 404 errors. So, it is set in Ithemes security plugin in Hide login area section.

    I remember one time, when I could not log in to admin of my website at all. Because of changes which ithemes security did in .htaccess file. I had to use original .htaccess and delete that one which was changed by ithemes security plugin. So maybe this time it is some problem with .htaccess file again?

    @david

    As soon as you click on ANY ‘Save All Changes’ button on the Settings page the iTSec plugin will write ALL changes/rules again to the .htaccess file.

    So if you had problems with some rules added to the .htaccess file by the plugin and you decided to manually replace the .htaccess file with a different\working copy it would make the .htaccess file temporarily out of sync with the iTSec plugin settings.

    Instead in such problem situations the best procedure is to pinpoint which rules in the .htaccess file are causing problems and then disable the corresponding iTSec plugin feature. This will ensure only the problematic rules in the .htaccess are removed and the .htaccess file content stays in sync with the iTSec plugin settings.

    Anyway I tested your scenario and I’m unable to reproduce the issue.
    So it looks like it is a specific issue in your env.
    Possibly caused by manually replacing the .htaccess file with a different copy. But there may also be a different yet unknown reason why this issue occurs.

    @david

    Just another thought …
    Could this be a problem because the URL of dashboard in the top menu is “domain.com/wp-admin/” instead of “www.domain.com/wp-admin/” ?

    I deactivated ithemes security plugin and everithing works as expected. Even with URL “domain.com/wp-admin/” instead of “www.domain.com/wp-admin/”. So what must I do so I can use iThemes Security plugin? David

    I finally solved my problem. It was because I use https for admin login, but on the front-end of website I was without https.

    @david

    I’m happy to hear you were able to resolve this mystery.

    The explanation though doesn’t make any sense to me.
    I tested after enabling SSL for Dashboard only but I’m still unable to reproduce the issue.
    Never mind, I don’t need to understand everything.

    I guess this topic can be marked as ‘resolved’ πŸ˜‰

    Oh, finally I got it. When I check box “Force SSL for Dashboard” it work fine everywhere. Thank you, for you time.
