    Hi all,
I’m currently keeping my firms old website up: http://www.werk-build.com
and I’m trying to update it in the background at /wp /wp directory and migrate when complete. I did this with our http://www.haus-arch.com website and it didn’t seem to have any issues.

    The run-down:
I have no plug-ins. I’ve removed them all.
I’m running 4.4.1…the latest as of this post.

Where it gets a little hairy.
I purchased a theme and WAS attempting to use it but I can’t seem to get beyond the default themes. I uploaded the demo.xml file from the theme provider to have some base content and then activated 2012 (i understand the name is words but I’m lazy). The home page now says “This is somewhat embarrassing, isn’t it?
It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.”
Activate 2015 and it’s “oops that page cannot be found” (same with 2016).

While my posts do show up in their default location, I am able to click and go to the post pages. Now if I go to any of the default themes or the themes I own and click “Live Preview”, I seem to have one of two things happen. Either it takes me to my main site at http://www.werk-build.com OR it just spins and spins and spins.

Disclaimer: I’m not extremely knowledgeable but am comfortable following directions.
    Thanks!

At Settings -> General, what do you have set for the WordPress and Site Addresses?

    Both are currently http://www.werk-build.com/wp
But I believe I had tried
    WP as http://www.werk-build.com/wp
    and Site as http://www.werk-build.com/
But it didn’t seem to do anything. I’m clearly not very knowledgeable. I appreciate any direction and help you can offer.

From what it looks like, you should have:

    WordPress Address: http://www.werk-build.com/wp

    Site Address: http://www.werk-build.com

Next, go to Settings -> Reading and make sure you have the front page set to an actual published page that exists, or just your latest posts.

    Done and done.

What happens now when I preview is I just see the HTML site.
Did I miss a step in how to get around the html stuffs? I know this is a less than ideal situation and if it were up to me, I’d say, let’s slap on a “maintenance mode” thing and go for it.

I’ve completely restarted the entire process. I’ve followed the WP instructions to a T! I then followed the instructions for what to do if you are in a sub-directory. I’ve unfortunately taken my html site offline while trying to do this, although I fear my boss may not agree with that decision. I am successfully able to view all of the default themes.
I suppose this is where my help ends as I cannot get any premium themes to display at all. When “Live Preview”ing the theme I would like to use, it displays the currently active theme (2016) and says “Oops this page cannot be found”… I’ve not received a bit of help from the developer, either.
It seems I’m stuck in an awkward spot that I’ll call the gray area between free and paid.
When and if I do, I’ll be sure to post the solution for others if they are so crazy to do this.

There are no special instructions for installing into subdirectory, so I’m not sure what you’re doing there.

It sounds like maybe you installed WordPress into a subdirectory, but then for some reason you moved its index.php file into the root directory, roughly replacing your old HTML site.

Let’s pretend you’re going to install WordPress in example.com/blog/

Then you’ll follow the instructions at https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress placing *all* of the files in the /blog/ directory.

And that’s it, that’s all you do. Follow those instructions and nothing more.

You’ll log in to the WordPress part of your site at example.com/blog/wp-admin/

You’ll view the WordPress part of your site at example.com/blog/

    James!
I found the issue with getting the theme installed. I’m not completely out of the woods but the issue was something installed on the service side BY THE HOST. I contacted them and it was sorted quickly.

The issue now remains that when I go to my website: werk-build.com/wordpress I still get a blank page.
I checked to make sure the index.php file wasn’t located in the root. Doing that overwrites my index.html website and then I just have full blown WP not in a subdirectory. I don’t know how that works but I cannot do that just yet.

I am able to edit my website through the back as you’ve described BUT I just can’t see the changes. I’ve figured out to get a peek, I can quickly put the index.php file into the root, check the site and see the changes, then change the index.php file to something like -index.php so it isn’t read.

At Settings -> General in your blog’s Dashboard, what do you have set for the WordPress and Site Addresses?

At Settings -> Reading, what do you have the front page set to display?

    Thread Starter haus-arch

    (@haus-arch)

    wordpress URL : http://www.werk-build.com/wordpress
    site URL : http://www.werk-build.com
(these are copied directly from what I’ve entered so not get anything confused)

    Re: reading settings:
Front page – Static – Home page.
This is because the theme I am using requires it to be set to home page. The issue I imagine is that I can’t change the permalink for this to say /wordpress/
But I’m confused here because I have set in Permalinks the custom structure to be website.com/wordpress/%postname%/

Ok, that Site Address needs to be http://www.werk-build.com/wordpress too.

It’s the site address of the WordPress site, not the main site.

    (@haus-arch)

    Aha! That did the trick!
    Works like a charm.
Thanks so much for your help James!
