Linux is open source software, like WordPress. As I understand it, any variation of Linux must be distributed free of charge. They can only charge for support. You can get Red Hat, Mandrake, Suse, or any of the other distributions for free at any time.

Suse normally only offers “free” FTP installs not downloadable ISO’s. This changed a couple of weeks ago when they started offering a 9.1 Personal ISO, but still not the Professional version. The offer is for a 9.1 Pro Installation DVD (along with other software).
You understand it incorrectly. There is no rule to distribute any variation of Linux free of charge at any time (only source must be made available and technically they could offer it by mail and charge for shipping if they wished). Yes they(distros) can and do charge $ for it, not just for support, if they didn’t a lot of Linux companies/distros/what-have-you would be out of business.
