Does it work with a default theme?
Yes, it used to work with the theme I was using that you created, but something happened and it doesn’t work anymore. I have deactivated and re activated my plugins with no change.
I mean, does it work properly with any of WP’s default themes?
I don’t know what a “default” theme is. I used themefuse as my theme author and the plugin used to fully integrate with the theme for all pages- login, showing login errors, registration, and their account. Now the theme that I am using for my site does not show up on those specific pages. The login page currently works fine, but if you incorrectly input your username/password it will not tell you what is wrong and the css will be messed up.
you can view the page at http://swiftecit.com/register and http://swiftecit.com/customers/customer-portal-login/
I believe I’m having the same issue with the latest update. My registration page, login page and lost password page do not recognize any heading tags on the page with the plugin activated in firefox or Edge: http://stocktips.com/register but looks fine in chrome. I disabled all plugins and switched to 2015 theme and it is for sure this plugin. It also doesn’t recognize any inline cssk, ie, changing the style of a heading tag.
thanks

A default theme is a theme that is bundled with WordPress (e.e Twenty Sixteen, Twenty Fifteen, etc).
I have seen those somewhere on my WordPress account, but how do I know if I am using those and if so which one? I don’t want to change any settings/my theme and risk messing up the website.
WP Admin -> Appearance -> Theme.
We are not using those but I have them available to use. We are currently using CloudHost Child. Is there a way to test it with the default theme without messing with the website/not testing in real time?
Setup your site the exact same on a local/development server. Possibly even using “Preview” on a theme…
