Permalinks structure does not change

Hi guys. I am not a developer so please bear with me. I am looking to shorten the URLs that i have. At present it includes the structure /product-category/bedroom/(end product), but i want to get rid of /product-category/bedroom/ and just have the main site name/product. I have changed the structure in settings/permalinks and put the custom structure to include just the /%postname%/ however it just will not take out that middle structure – any ideas?
