What do you mean by "modify a theme"

    I am a new user of WP and a novice with my nonprofit web site in general. i just saw that WP auto updated my version to 4.4.1 and sent recommended updates to various themes and plugins. However all the recommendations for the the updated theme(s) came with strong language regarding “modifications” being lost when you update the theme. That was followed by recommendations for setting up parent child relationships which goes way over my skill level.

    Since I am a beginner, I suspect what you all mean by “modify theme” is different than what I think it is. I uploaded pics/logos/text etc to my theme but I don’t think that is what you mean by “modify theme” Can you clarify for me?

    Also, is it safe to assume you do NOT auto update themes?
