Perhaps a plugin such as this one will do the trick to achieve what you are after? I’ve not personally used this one before but it looks to be rated pretty well and is also responsive. Worth checking out in my opinion. Hope this helps.

Hello
No sorry. I installed it and its activated. Then I go to the page where my image is and click edit and the image settings are still the same as before.
make sure that the images are links and that in the image settings in the post they are set to media file and not attachment. also, which plugin are you using?

Hello
Thank you so much. I got it to work
In the media library I first copy the URL of the image which is displayed on the right hand side of the screen, then I go back to the page and click on the image so the toolbox appears. I click edit then in the display settings I click “Link to custom URL” I then paste the link into it and click Update, and it works. Now when I click on the image a bigger version pops out. The two plugins I have activated are Fancy Lightbox and Lightbox slider. Not sure if that makes a difference but I’ve got the solution I wanted. Thanks 🙂
