Feature: post thumbnails in Prev/Next navigation
-
Hello,
I’ve been trying to figure out if Tiny Framework would be the right theme for me.One feature I’ve been trying to find in this theme as well concerns the navigation between posts using the PREV/NEXT (that are displayed) using post’s featured image thumbnails.
Is this feature doable in Tiny?

First, I would search if there is a plugin for that. I would guess it should be at least one.
Otherwise I would check Twenty Fifteen theme and see if it could be ported from there, it should be not too hard.
Thanks for the response!
AFAIK, 2015 does not have this functionality, at least by this preview:
https://wordpress.org/themes/twentyfifteen/However, it does have a more favorable layout for the navi.
I found a relevant thread eventually here, but haven’t found the time to test if this can be ported:
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/how-to-display-nextprevious-post-thumbnail
It does have. 2015 uses featured image as a background for the button:
You can see it here:
https://twentyfifteendemo.wordpress.com/2014/10/28/sticky-post-with-a-featured-image/
You’re right.
I wonder how I missed it. It does not behave quite the way I’d like, but will probably give an adequate start to adapt it.
Yes, the thing is I did not – and still do not – find the incoming link to get to the demo you linked (on .ORG). The straight link naturally works, but the demo under WP themes (linked above) in .ORG goes the wrong way.
Demo is never the best option, just install locally on your site and give it a try 😉
I investigated this for a half an hour. I found the code snippet required to generate the CSS but didn’t have the time to figure out how to inject the inline CSS to HEAD in order to get it working.
This is from 2015’s
functions.php:function twentyfifteen_post_nav_background() {
if ( ! is_single() ) {
return;
}$previous = ( is_attachment() ) ? get_post( get_post()->post_parent ) : get_adjacent_post( false, ”, true );
$next = get_adjacent_post( false, ”, false );
$css = ”;if ( is_attachment() && ‘attachment’ == $previous->post_type ) {
return;
}if ( $previous && has_post_thumbnail( $previous->ID ) ) {
$prevthumb = wp_get_attachment_image_src( get_post_thumbnail_id( $previous->ID ), ‘post-thumbnail’ );
$css .= ‘
.post-navigation .nav-previous { background-image: url(‘ . esc_url( $prevthumb[0] ) . ‘); }
.post-navigation .nav-previous .post-title, .post-navigation .nav-previous a:hover .post-title, .post-navigation .nav-previous .meta-nav { color: #fff; }
.post-navigation .nav-previous a:before { background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.4); }
‘;
}if ( $next && has_post_thumbnail( $next->ID ) ) {
$nextthumb = wp_get_attachment_image_src( get_post_thumbnail_id( $next->ID ), ‘post-thumbnail’ );
$css .= ‘
.post-navigation .nav-next { background-image: url(‘ . esc_url( $nextthumb[0] ) . ‘); border-top: 0; }
.post-navigation .nav-next .post-title, .post-navigation .nav-next a:hover .post-title, .post-navigation .nav-next .meta-nav { color: #fff; }
.post-navigation .nav-next a:before { background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.4); }
‘;
}wp_add_inline_style( ‘twentyfifteen-style’, $css );
}add_action( ‘wp_enqueue_scripts’, ‘twentyfifteen_post_nav_background’ );
Finally got around to finish this.
Only change to the code posted above required to get this working is replacing
wp_add_inline_style( ‘twentyfifteen-style’, $css );
with
wp_add_inline_style( ‘tinyframework-style’, $css );
because the
twentyfifteen-styleis naturally not enqueued in Tiny.Additionally I suggest the following style definitions, which you could place in
style.css:/* thumbnail navigation backgrounds @lassial*/
.post-navigation .nav-next, .post-navigation .nav-previous
{
padding: 1.5rem;
background-size: cover;
text-shadow: 1px 1px #000;
}
