Can anyone help me? I am so frustrated.

I need to use links in my blog entries. The links I put in seem to be working fine to me, but I’m being told again and again that they are “no follow tags”.

First, does this mean that readers can’t click on them and be taken to the website that is linked? If it does mean this, then I just don’t get it because I can click on my links and they work for me. My readers have told me they work for them also.

Secondly, how can I see my settings to see what my blog is doing as far as follow and no follow tags? This varies from theme to theme, right? How can I see what the various themes are set to do so that I can make sure that my theme supports “FOLLOW” tags.

I’m sorry to be so dense. I have wasted countless hours trying to figure this out and I just seem to be spinning my wheels. TIA for any help!

  • No follow means that search engines will not follow the link therefore the site being linked doesn’t receive any PR boost from the link.

Either post a link to your website or the link to the theme your currently using.

    My blog

I just changed my theme a few minutes ago thinking maybe I should try a different theme. Prior to the current one, I was using “Tulip Time 1.0a”

    Thanks for your help!!!

First, does this mean that readers can’t click on them and be taken to the website that is linked?

No it doesn’t. As jeremyclark13 stated “no follow” relates only to Search engines, not your readers. Your blog works fine and you don’t need to worry about it.

Are you saying that since I changed my theme, my links are now “FOLLOW” links?

If so, one more question…how do I tell how the various themes are set so that if I change my theme again, I can make sure that my links continue to be follow links?

    TIA!

DUH – I just stumbled across the privacy setting that blocks a blog from showing up on search engines. I changed mine to show up – is the no follow-do follow fix as simple as this?

I still need to know what to look for in the various themes to make sure I pick a do follow theme, too.

Thanks a MILLION for all your help!!!

    Shameless bump…

Can anyone help me make sure I understand this…please?????

First, write down what is your understanding about “follow” and “nofollow”.

It has been explained to you above, you just didn’t read it.

You’re talking about several different unrelated things in this thread, so we really need to know just what you’re talking about before we can answer appropriately. Try and explain what you know, slowly.

I need to use links in my blog entries. The links I put in seem to be working fine to me, but I’m being told again and again that they are “no follow tags”.

Who is telling you this? Why are they telling you this? What is the significance of “nofollow” as you understand it?

The short of it is that if you’re just listening to what other random people say, then they probably don’t know what they’re talking about either. It’s the problem of the blind leading the blind.

In fact, “nofollow” has several different meanings, depending on what, exactly, you’re talking about. So we need to understand the context you’re using before we can give you sound advice and help you to understand.

However, to help, I’ll give you a bit of a factual point in the right direction:

    a) The privacy settings page does enable/disable a nofollow setting, however it’s a different one than your first post was describing (“nofollow” as it relates to links).

    b) Yes, all links put in comments are generally “nofollow” type links. This prevents search engines from following those links and giving page rank due to them. WordPress does NOT make your blog links into “nofollow” links by default. Only comments links. This discourages (but does not prevent) spam.

    c) When it comes to links, “nofollow” has zero meaning other than to search engines. If you’re not a search engine, you’d never ever notice any difference.

WordPress uses nofollow links correctly. There is no real reason that you would want to change this, unless you really understand what it means from a search engine optimization perspective. Modifying the default nofollow behavior might hurt your own page rankings, so it’s not a thing to do lightly and without understanding.

Thanks for the help guys…I assure you that I *AM* reading every word because I really need to understand this.

    My understanding:

NOFOLLOW: Links are blocked from being picked up by search engines.

DOFOLLOW: Links that search engines are able to detect.

I’ll back up a bit. One of the things I use my blog for is “blog payment” posts. I have been told several times by two different Blog Payers that my links IN MY ENTRIES are nofollow. Links in my comments is not an issue for me at all and I couldn’t care less about this.

Until today, I did not even understand what this meant. But now thanks to you, I’m getting there. I assume that the links I put in my sponsored posts need to be DOFOLLOW in order for them to be picked up by search engines. So, if WordPress does NOFOLLOW by default, I do need to know and understand how to manually go in and change this, if possible.

I can’t be the only person using their WordPress blog for blog payment posts. How do other people do this?

Thanks for your help and patience. I really, really appreciate your help!

Show us the links in question. What’s the URL?

A regular link looks like this:
    <a href="http://example.com">example</a>

A nofollow link looks like this:
    <a rel="nofollow" href="http://example.com">example</a>

WordPress does not make links in the entries nofollow by default. So without actually seeing them for ourselves, we can’t help you.

Here are copies of two recent entries that I’ve been told are NOFOLLOW by two different sites:

You know those bracelets that people who have hidden medical conditions wear? This site has a pretty decent selection of medical id bracelets. Anyone reading this who is in the situation of needing one of these bracelets…first, I’m so sorry…and second, this is probably a good place to buy one if you need to. They come in gold and sterling silver and have many different options to make them quite attractive.

When you go to a trade show (IF you go to a trade show…LOL) all those booths have to come from somewhere. This company provides and services trade show booths for companies that want to participate in trade shows. I never really thought about it before, but it makes sense. Those booths have to come from somewhere. This looks like a good option if you are in this situation. Check it out!

I don’t see that no follow code you posted, but I can’t ignore what I’m being told by these sites. =/

Those links aren’t no follow so the people telling you they are are incorrect. Tell them to look at the source… there is no “no follow” statement there.

    Thread Starter katjo8

    (@katjo8)

    OK – that’s what I was hoping you’d say.

One more quick question, if I could? Is it possible that they were appearing NO FOLLOW because of my privacy setting being set to block my blog from coming up on search engines?

Here are copies of two recent entries that I’ve been told are NOFOLLOW by two different sites:

That’s a stupid thing to assume that this forum and your blog assign the same tags to the links, if any.
    Copying your posts is useless.

Want help? Give a link. Period.
Otherwise you are just wasting time…

    Thread Starter katjo8

    (@katjo8)

    Links:

    example 1

    example 2

Moshu…please don’t take this the wrong way, but it really isn’t stupidity to not understand the way something works. It’s ignorance. And I am trying to understand.

Thanks for your help. I hope the links I supplied above are what is needed to figure this out.
