My question is about the setting “Exclude files from scan that match these wildcard patterns.” ==> how does it get populated and any reason I shouldn’t clear it out?

Documentation does not say anything about it getting auto-populated:

This lets you exclude certain file extensions from your scan. You can use this if Wordfence is getting stuck on large files that you know are not malicious like certain kinds of backup files.

I have not used this field and yet it gets populated.

I noticed on one of my clients, it has 21 .jpg files listed – some of them quite small(!).

    plus
    wp-includes/ms-deprecated.php
    wp-content/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/all_in_one_seo_pack-nl_NL.mo

Of course… I am concerned that somehow a hacker can add to the exclude list after a hack. (paid to worry)

Thanks and congrats on the 10,000,000 downloads!

  • Hi,

Wordfence can exclude large files if they are causing the scan to fail. Normally, small files like jpg’s are not excluded automatically. Not normal behavior. It’s possible that your scans are failing. Here are some things to try:

    http://docs.wordfence.com/en/My_scans_don’t_finish._What_would_cause_that%3F

If that doesn’t work, try enabling debugging mode on the Wordfence options page. If it stops without completing, report back the last several lines of the “Scan detailed Activity” box and we can take a look.
