Wow, WordPress is so helpful with a WordPress problem.
Best practice is to contact that person and ask him for his login and password.
Also read http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password for other ways to get access.

The problem is: I can’t get in touch with this person AND it appears that maybe he stopped hosting or cut me out because my username is no longer “valid” despite the fact that the wordpress site is not being updated and belongs to a local non-profit.
I don’t even know how to obtain the domain name back if I got a new website (which isn’t an option right now.)

Whoislookup can help with identifying the ownership+control of domain name

most webhosting companies have a tool to look up domain name ownership.
Whoishostingthis can help with identifying the webhosting for a website

As staartmees suggested, Resetting the password using PHPmyAdmin in your webhosting account is the way to get access when you are shut out.

I’ll look into the first two links you provided, but the last one is a common one I’ve seen over and over, but the problem there is that I was never part of the webhosting. I only created a wordpress.org account to ask these questions today. Because I wasn’t part of the planning of the site, I was only the person that signed on to update the website, I don’t have any clue or access to that information.

Honestly, I’m out of my element. I went to those two links and I see the information, but I don’t know how it helps me. I suppose I need someone that has a clue about this.
@zoesah The thing is, we don’t have access to that information either. We don’t run your website.
WordPress is downloadable software that anybody can use to build websites. We can’t gain access to your site, and so we can’t give it back to you or anything of the sort.
Your site exists on some hosting service somewhere. That’s who you have to contact. They’re the only people that can help you.

Ok. Thanks. I know it’s a tricky situation.
I have no access to my non-profit page, purposefully done by the person that created it, and I have no idea how to regain or gain access to my domain name.
Sorry, but this is a issue with personal or business relationships and not a WordPress issue.
If you can’t follow the docs to try and regain access to the site yourself, consider looking for a reputable person on http://jobs.wordpress.net/ or http://directory.codepoet.com or http://upwork.com
(FYI, it’s not a good idea to respond to work offers from random forum users who have read about the issues.)
