Featured content slider order wrong

Frustrating problem trying to get my posts displayed in date order. The posts are dated correctly, and the featured_content_ids transient array has the posts in the correct order, sorted by post date, and the posts all appear in the slider.

However, the slider is (apparently) displaying the content by the date the posts were created, not by there order in the featured_content_ids.

I have the latest wordpress and twenty fourteen versions, and while this is a child theme, there are not any function or style overrides that should affect the slider.

Would appreciate any help with this.

It also doesn’t seem to make any difference if you pick “Ascending” or “Descending”, the featured_content_ids array is sorted “Descending”.
