Can't See Captions on Gallery Images

Haven’t ever made a gallery before, but when I click “create gallery” I have 2 problems:

1. Even though I’m entering captions, they are not displaying. When I click on the images, I’d like to be able to see the captions. My theme is Virtue and I thought that the captions were supposed to hover over the images.

1b. I’d like to be able to see an image description, too. But I have no idea if this is possible.

2. I’m not seeing any options to help control how the gallery looks besides # of columns (I thought I could control whether it was circular, etc.)
