The number of shares is taken directly from various social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, etc …), so if the counter shows 0 means that the Social has returned value 0.
You can make external controls using this site http://sharetally.co/ and see if the values match 🙂

The twitter button doesn’t seem to be working correctly. It takes a long time to load and then shows 0. There were more than 5 shares on twitter on each of my posts.

Twitter is changing its API and then, sometimes, the plugin fails to get the number of shares (which is why, after about 3 seconds, the counter shows 0).
But do not worry, you will not lose the number of shares, the plugin simply can not “contact” the Twitter server and then displays 0.
We are working on a new solution with the new Twitter API, will be available in future updates.
