WordPress 4.3 Insert Link function

Is there a reason the post panel behavior keeps changing so much between versions? My links used to turn into links if I pasted a url into the wordpress panel, then it stopped and it would do it if I highlighted the text and pasted the link. Now in 4.3 I have to highlight the link, click the insert link button, and hit the insert button again. Way too many steps for something that was so incredibly simple in the past. Probably not a big deal for some, but think is something I use literally tens of thousands of times per year, so the added time adds up. Maybe I’m doing something wrong with my installation, but I didnt have these issues in earlier versions..
