Ok, seems that wordpress released version 4.3 yesterday and my site has auto updated.
I’m guessing this is the problem – how do I get around this? Anyone else having issues?

Your site should not have auto updated. There is no automatic update from 4.2.x to 4.3, it has to be initiated by you or your host.
Now the custom drop down menu has gone back to the standard wordpress twentythirteen menu, my custom fonts have gone back to the standard fonts, and my sidebar that I have on the blog page has gone:
*Looks*
It looks like you were running a modified version of Twenty Thirteen and when the update happened all of your changes were wiped out.
That’s guaranteed to happen every time and is why it’s recommended that you have a child theme instead.

Do you have a backup of the /home3/richardf/public_html/wayofthegentleman.net/wp-content/themes/twentythirteen/ directory? Just that one directory and nothing else.
Jan, many thanks for your reply, I appreciate your help. Now I understand what’s going on.
I got a design in a psd from a designer, then got a developer off elance to code it into a wordpress theme.
He edited up the basic 2013 theme I was using instead of creating a new one.
Talking him now, he’s insisting this is my fault for updating wordpress. I’m saying that wordpress updates all the time and he should have known that this would happen.
I don’t have a backup, unless there’s auto backups somewhere from previous days on hostgator?

He has basically created a lot of technical debt for you now and is using his bad practices an an excuse not to update WordPress.
This is what I get for using a cheap developer off Elance.
If anyone here is a competent wordpress developer, let me know! Could use someone who knows what they are doing to come and fix this mess.
