Paginated Gallery

I am looking to add pagination to my galleries and have found this code but nothing seems to happen when I try to use it.

[gallery numberposts="6"]
<!--nextpage-->
[gallery numberposts="6" offset="6"]

This is how my gallery code looks at the moment

[gallery link="file" size="large" columns="2" ids="396,394,393,392,391,390,389,386,384,378,377,379"]

I am using the Cleaner Gallery plugin too if that helps
