Can't create "Child Theme" because theme already Child??

    Hi all, Newbie here.

    How do you create a custom theme if your theme is already a child (not a parent)?

    I’ve spent hours trying to make a “child theme” out of InSync (Genesis) theme, only to discover that it’s probably not working because Insync is in itself a “child theme” (I think??). What are my options here?? I want to customize my style.css, but not lose all my work when the theme gets updated.

    How do you create a custom theme if your theme is already a child (not a parent)?

    in this case, you have to happily edit the theme directly.

    in case of only formatting adaptations, consider to work with a ‘custom CSS’ plugin.

    Hi Michael, thank you!

    What is best practice when doing so? Would it make sense for me to create a backup of Insync and edit one, so I have one copy that’s unedited? Will all my changes be deleted when the child theme is updated?

    What is the purpose of using a “custom CSS plugin”? Am I safer using something like that? Or does it just make it easier for people like myself with not as much experience?

    making and keeping a backup copy of the original unedited theme is always a good idea.

    when you edit the theme directly, and when you then later upload an updated version, all changes to the edited one will be lost.

    using a ‘custom CSS’ plugin will preserve any formatting edits even if the theme is updated.

    also, it might make it easier to re-trace any formatting changes if this is needed at some point.

    it will not help with formatting per-se.
