Generally, 150dpi should be enough. At the default height of 3cm, this equals 177px in height. However, this may also be a file format issue – if you are using PNG, try switching to JPG, as this generally works much better in PDF. Remember that image processing for a PDF is quite different from images on a website, because the former happens on the server and the latter in the browser/computer of the visitor.
