problems migrating from subdirectory to root

HI there,
I started my site in a subdirectory to which I then wanted to move to the root.

I used https://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory as my guide on how to do this.

However I still can’t see my site and I’m getting a fatal error message with the following:

“WARNING: Require (home1/ab36459/public_html/wordpress/wp-blog-header.php: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home1/ab36459/public_html/index.php on line 17

Fatal error: require(): Failed opening required ‘/home1/ab36459/public_html/wordpress/wp-blog-header.php’ (include_path=’.:/opt/php54/lib/php’) in /home1/ab36459/public_html/index.php on line 17

The public_html had a index_html folder which I think is the issue, as it has a html file I was using to let people know my site was under construction. When I took it off I get the message above and if I put it back on as it is now, the message about my site being under construction still appears.

How could I please fix this?

my subdirectory is http://www.staging2.elbaescobarmakeup.co.nz

Hi,

I believe you have moved your WordPress website from subdirectory http://www.staging2.elbaescobarmakeup.co.nz to http://elbaescobarmakeup.co.nz.

As of now, http://elbaescobarmakeup.co.nz. is showing following error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ”/wp-blog-header.php” (T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING) in /home1/ab36459/public_html/index.php on line 17

It is a syntax error due to additional special character in index.php. Download the fresh copy of WordPress and replace the index.php file with current index.php. It should resolve your issue.

I’ve done it (I think) but now I get this error code:
Warning: require_once(/home1/ab36459/public_html/admin.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home1/ab36459/public_html/index.php on line 11

I’m using a theme that I bought from a third company do you think that could be the issue?

Can you paste the code of index.php file here?

The path in question is … /home1/ab36459/public_html/Staging2/index.php

that is the whole code for staging 2 index.php which is the same as the html one. It is also the same as the original wordpress one which I downloaded this morning. I can’t see any differences, can you?

No,there is no difference.

I just noticed that both of your sub-domains are working perfectly fine. Following are the correct (Mind the capital ‘S’ in first URL and small ‘s’ in second URL) URLs.

http://elbaescobarmakeup.co.nz/Staging2/
http://elbaescobarmakeup.co.nz/staging1/

yes the subdirectories are working fine but now I want subdirectory Staging2 to become main directory but can’t get the site to redirect 🙁 that is why im getting all those errors.

I copied the index.php and htaccess to public_html and changed index.php as advised in the article but can’t get it to work… Is line 17 supposed to have the name of my site instead of wp-blog-header.php’

I would suggest you to follow following guide to move WordPress website from subdirectory to root (start from scratch).

Thank you Accu 🙂 I did all that again and still didn’t work, I’m afraid.

I ended up downloading a search and replace tool from the Internet and that did the trick. it was very easy and the only issue was the cache plugin that I ended up deactivating for the process to complete.
