Troubles with gallery

I want to make a gallery similar to the picture in the link. So you click the thumbnail and it will appear big on the left side and meanwhile you can go and change the page of thumnails with pagination.

I was thinking to make with custom post type, but now as I started to do, I realised that I kinda don’t really understand how to start it.

Could someone suggest what to use and like what I really need and have to do.
